Mushroom Heart

Passing moments, troubled thoughts,
Stormy sea of emotions.
They grow like mushrooms in my heart.
Why the mushrooms?
Because it's dark in there -
And mushrooms like that.
Why can't I grow white lilies and bright red roses
That smell deliciously nice -
Inside this hollow cavity called my heart?
Why can't I hear children's laughter
And feel the sun's rays lighting every crevice?
Why the mushrooms?
Because it's moist in there -
From all the tears.
Put aside the tears, the fears,
For just a moment - please -
And look.
Look beyond, there in the distance.
A light shines forth as the fog subsides.
I can see the lighthouse.
I can feel the rays of the sun.
I can hear the children's laughter.
I can smell the roses.
Where did all the mushrooms go?
I ate them, swallowed them up -
Just like I did my fears.
