Gregg

In the dark and wetness Gregg didn't notice the tears, but she was
crying. She stood in the night time downpour, her clothes saturated,
then she nodded, turned and walked into the darkness. Gregg stared at
her figure disappearing into the storm then looked down, would he see
her again, he wondered. It had been a long drawn out decision, in fact,
no decision was made on his part, she had decided to leave, she was
leaving him for Delaware, and then she was gone, Gregg felt very
alone.
He turned and walked back to the car, opened the door and was annoyed
by the irritating buzzer that told him his lights were on. He started
it and slowly pulled away. Driving through the forest heading home,
Gregg was in auto pilot mode, there was no traffic on the road after
all it was four in the morning. Coming around a long bend Gregg touched
the brake, he lent forward looking through the rain on his windscreen,
there in the road was what looked like a large bag. He slowed the car
then stopped. He sat in the car for a while and looked around, darkness
prevailed, just the rain in the headlights and the large black bag
could be made out. Should he drive around it and go on? He sat and
pondered for a few seconds, then turned off the engine. He opened the
car door and jumped in his seat, the buzzer went off and frightened him
half to death, he got out and shut the door.
Gregg approached the bag, stood over it and gave it a light kick with
his foot, it was heavy he knelt down and had a closer look. It was a
bag, he could see a zip, he reached for it and slowly unzipped the bag.
A moment of confusion followed, he failed to recognise what was before
him then the horrible realisation hit him. Jumbled up in transparent
bags was a head, legs, a torso, and arms. Gregg reeled away and
convulsively vomited on the road. For a few minutes he retched with his
hands on his knees, then he stumbled back to the car door and got
inside. He was soaked and trembling. He looked around terrified, he
started the engine and sped off, it was about thirteen miles to his
house and town and there he would go to the police. Repeatedly looking
in his rear view mirror he lurched towards town.
The police took his story seriously at first but when no body could be
found on the road, they started to doubt him or rather his sanity. Just
as a precaution they searched his car. They looked into the location of
his girlfriend too. She never got to Delaware.
In the car boot the police found some of her hair. Although they
suspected foul play, nothing could be proven and no body found. Gregg's
girlfriend was recorded as one of the millions of people who have
disappeared into the night. Gregg never travels at night anymore.
