After we got back from the crime scene, I sat at my desk and put my head in my hands. There were some days, like today, were I just couldn’t take my job. But I knew I had to keep going, had to find this fucker.
“You look terrible,” someone said.
I looked between my fingers, at the floor, and stared at a pair of black shoes. Shoes I knew all too well, along with that voice.
“This isn’t a good time, Ash,” I grumbled. “It’s hot and I haven’t had any food all morning, so—”
Asher Brisbane chuckled and said, “I can supply the food, but you’ll have to get up and come with me to get it, Harper.”
I looked at him and sighed. “Yeah, alright, I’m coming.”
He smiled crookedly. “What did you find?”
“Body of a bartender,” I said as we walked out into the heat. “Did you ever go to Frost?”
“I’ve been there a few times,” He nodded. “It was nothing special – just your typical bar.”
“The woman that was killed, maybe you saw her.” I didn’t need to take any notes, because I remembered her clearly. When I described her to Asher, he seemed to stop walking.
“I know her. I mean, I knew her. Maddie was one of the first people I met when I moved here. We talked sometimes, but when she got a job at the bar, we lost contact. How did she die?”
“We believe she was strangled,” I told him. “But we’re looking into it.”
He didn’t do well with the deceased, so Leigh kept him working at a desk. Not that Asher minded – the further from the dead bodies, the better.
Too bad he couldn't seem to get away from them.
