The Most Original Thoughts Are Idiocy

from the ABC set Life Alterations

There is a predominance of thought that 'originality' and 'uniqueness' are among the most cherished attributes of a thinking mind. It is demanded of everyone to attempt this feat and no one wants to be a commonplace thinker. Having unique opinions can make one the inspiration of ones social networks.

These thoughts should be framed in facts, hold relevance, and be within the realm of sanity. There is still abundant room, however, for stupidity and inanity.

What the masses of people have lost, or never had are the foundations of knowledge formerly promulgated by the educated classes. These methods impose a narrower focus on essential facts and highlight significant themes. These days this would be viewed by many as indoctrination and the dreaded hemming in of the individual's natural impulse towards self expression and intuitive creativity.

Original thoughts should be contributions to the best of what is known. Not merely frightful alternatives.

Without specific examples it's hard to know what you are objecting to or in favour of.

This is the beginning of a possible longer statement on the subject. In reading of the lives of various important intellectuals I have noted that most of them were told at a young age to follow a rigorous course of reading in what are regarded as the classics. This is significantly absent from most people's view of how we should be educated anymore. More importance is placed on personal feelings and impressions derived from mere existence and from an intuitive source that is beholding to no outside influence of any note. Following the versions of knowledge and wisdom derived from a classical education is even looked down on as being something tired and having been shown for its lack of true merit.

You really need a specific example?
