A DOWNTOWN PUB, HALIFAX - poem

from the ABC set POETRY - A Passage of Motion 1

Nineteen means chug-a-lugging
legal brew, downing drafts
in two's and three's
money just paper moving
from one pocket to another.

Some geezer’s broke after a
third round, wife & kids
waiting, waitress happy with
her kind of crowd
cigarette smoke and stale jokes

orders of fish ‘n chips ‘n
lots of beer, a noisy bunch.
And tips are good.

A few can't down a glass
quickly enough, but why bother
the porcelain bowl is always
ready for another customer.

Excitement winds through the
melee, coming as laughter with
the next tray of drinks.

Halifax is an international seaport city, vital and alive with motion. It boasts fine universities, such as Dalhousie and St. Mary's. The IWK is a top Children's Hospital and several of Canada's naval fleet frequently park along the waterfront, adding to the city's menu. RLP

And you can smoke in a bar? That makes it very different from Europe now.
