Lay Feathers Down

from the ABC set POETRY - A Passage of Motion 2

The sun brings blistering
heat, dewy wings
drying beneath clusters
of Birch. Silence

knows her name, ruffed
grouse crouching.

Nature’s menu is subtle,
marauders seeking to feast
upon her neck
owl and fox scenting

as she boasts a feathery
prominence. Upright shuffles
guide her to safety.
