The Pick-Up Man

from the ABC set POETRY - A Passage of Motion 2

Unshaven, grimy from
morning’s workout
looks and bends, picking
up someone else’s
left over treats

hasn’t missed a roadside
curb or street litter
box since 6 am,
discarded pop cans
and bottles his
game.

A grin of satisfaction as he
steadies his bicycle
checks the balance of
noisy, bulging bags
hanging from his bike trailer

pauses a moment, then
heading off to the Bottle Depot
returns my wave.

What a wonder this man is. Does he really pick up others litter? Tidying up for others? Is he employed?

Yes, Pia. This fellow exists. Of course he brings the cans to the Recycle Depot for a nickel apiece. Another fellow I know does pick up litter, including another who does it from his wheelchair. These are some of the angels in our society. Such inspirations, Eh? Richard LP
