View from the Top

Petrol-bins overlap harbour’s western edge
rising in bulbous canisters, white for purity
progress symptoms in a rush-along society
as man’s machines grind across the Angus Macdonald.

From this observer’s crows nest all is calm
on McNabb Island, its only outpost
a lighthouse beam smiling at me, this
neck of land guarding harbour’s open mouth.

Astride the scene below swooping in proud
delight, seagulls check out trails
they know so well, patient in their quest
for space aside the parking lot below.

Box cars patient with spacious holds, shunted
for now off the beaten path, nearby flags blowing
proudly in the wind…
this striking view from our holiday floor.

So much description packed into this! I really got a 'whirl' of the place reading this ;-)

A very enjoyable read, well done.

Thank you, Nathan. I was with a group of deep sea fishermen at the time of writing this poem. We were heading out to sea, from Halifax harbour and on our way to catching Mackerel. Yummy. I caught six. Richard LP ps. I am working on putting a book of 77 poems together, (never had a full book published yet). Do you know any good sites re advice for setting up?

I love the glimpse of another place.

Thank you, too, Camilla, for your kind thoughts. You also have a nice way of expressing thoughts and ideas in your poetry. All the best, in your writing. Richard LP
