Young lovers

We will always be
Young lovers,
You and me.

We will not grow old together
And have a side of the bed,
With our own separate lamps

We will not settle into the same routine,
And get sick of each others voices.

We will always be
Young lovers,
You and me,

Although I would have loved
To take long walks
On Sunday afternoons
With your ageing hand in mine

Although I would have loved
To wake up on my side of the bed,
And roll over to yours
To kiss your ageing cheek.

It is true I would have loved these things,
But would have hated for you to have grown sick
Of my ageing voice

So perhaps it’s best we stay young lovers,
Forever,
You and me
