The Invention Family

Necessity is the mother of lovely young Invention,
and her father is Industry

Her beloved older brother is Yearning
and her favorite aunt is: Learning,
the child-less widow of Ambition
a war-hero whose grave she strews with literary blossoms

Her fat old uncle is Discipline,
a hard-working butcher
who tries to reform
his wild and musical son: Inspiration,

who's jealous of his favored sister: Manifestation,
who keeps a portrait of their common grandfather: Tradition
with his arm about his lovely wife: Culture,
who was officially the beloved daughter of Religion
but quite resembled his 2nd cousin: Mutation,
a most eccentric titan

who was said to have inherited his great riches
from a mean old man named Thrift,
who had a soft spot for Mutation's wife,
Thrift's kindly but wayward baby sister: Amity,
whose real love was Philosophy, an Irish wolf hound
who once lived on rats
while defending the couple
from the diverse superstitious beasts
that shared the woods in which they lived...

and later became a fat canine patriarch
as he fed on lamb, poetry, art, and heron
before falling asleep on his silken bed,
which was sewn by Mutation's poor relations,
who'd once turned him out
during a time of drought,
after years of calling him a freak and a lout

poor Mutation would've starved
were it not for a charitable lady named Necessity
who gave him the axe of creativity,
and whose servant Tranquillity
taught him the art of woodsman,
and showed him to a cabin
in the woods of productivity
