A beggar, asleep
by the side of the road,
his shadow strewn
like a discarded blanket.
His pillow –
a sack of sweet potatoes.
A T-shirt that said,
‘Save Our Seals’.
A pair of cut-down jeans;
one leg missing at the knee –
clasped to his chest
an amber rosary.
My eye drawn
to the road that went on and on –
seemingly to nowhere
and beyond.

Hello Tina,
I really enjoyed this you tell your story and write so simply, yet perfectly balance the imagery with emotion. I think this is one of my favourites on here, thanks for sharing this x

- love the opening lines Tina, a very simple yet very beautiful poem ;)

It seems we meet again, this rather dismal and dreary afternoon. You brightened my day though, and I thank you for your words. Hope you've got the sunshine and if you have, send it my way, please;-)

I really like the listing of the 'ordinary' detail and then in contrast the allmost philosophical observation. Simple and rich. Margot

Hi Julie! I know what you mean...on every count.
Ralph McTell - wasn't it? 'Streets of London'. The chorus went something like this, or so I remember:-
'Let me take you by the hand - lead you through the streets of London and I will show you something to make you change your mind'.
And yes it certainly has all the sentiment you express in your 'famous' 'Oh for a Bed for the Homeless'.
My thanks to you as always. Your animated comments unfailingly make me smile;-)
