A little drop of poison

A little drop of poison

A little drop of poison
Put some toad in the hole
A little water in your blood
Leaves a tattoo on your soul

The doctor said beware of dying
As the breath caught a sail
I could hear the family sighing
Just as the hammer was nailed

You’re not going to take me today
I whispered into an empty mouth
I’m not ready to leave or pray
Or join those that have drifted south

So sting me with your sneering
Cut me with your blades
It’s not me that you’re steering
I’m not hiding beneath the shades

I’ll keep hanging on to my bones
I’ll keep breathing into my skin
Let me sleep underneath those stones
That never move with the wind

I’m not looking for my last meal
I’m not saying I’m out on my knees
I’m just trying to explain how I feel
But no one can hear my pleas

So put a little drop of poison
Down into the toad in the hole
Put some water into my blood
And my face on a totem pole

Just so someone somewhere
Can look up to me.

Beautiful poem, very moving. Almost speaks with desperation. Well done. Best wishes Beeme x
