Her husband left her in the lurch;
better he’d left her in the church,
twenty years she had to search
for a kind word or a present.
We all knew, he was a prick
although he looked so fucking slick.
I suppose love just makes you thick;
accepting years of torment.
Christmas’ come and birthdays go
like the seasons; sun, or snow
she always put on such a show
but we all knew for certain.
We all knew how much she cried
but always kept her head up high;
she’d given all but kept her pride
behind her cheap net curtain.
On her birthday, he popped his clogs
With his mates out at the dogs
Dressed to kill in his best togs
Somehow this seemed fitting
Four kids and a council house
was left by her devoted spouse
and yet she’s quiet as a mouse
beside his coffin sitting.
For love, we just can’t legislate
it’s no good simply to berate;
once love bites, it much too late -
besides, they wouldn’t listen.
Some day we’ll invent a pill
called ‘Common Sense’ or ‘Lover’s Chill’,
that while allowing some free will,
won’t let glass, like diamonds glisten.

Very nice and an interesting rhythm. I like the idea of a pill called 'Common Sense' but you'd have to force people to take it.

I like this threeleaf. There's always someone like this everywhere I've lived- you look at them, and then you look at their partner and you think "why?"

Cheers chuck; we used to have an old saying here, if one of the lads was acting like a complete arsehole:
'Go and buy yourself a bottle of Cop-on!' - seldom worked either.

Yea, I know it insert. A good mate of mine from school (and that's not today or yesterday) had this type of experience. We are trying to convince her, that there is a life after and it's not too late. After years of abuse (psychological)she is finding it hard. She was a lovely bubbly kid and a smashing looker; she's just gotta remember which cupboard she stored her self-confidence in and get it out, dust it off and start using it again. It ain't no easy search and a lot of rust has to be cleaned off.
Thanks for reading.

You're writing some really rhythmic poems these days Chris and they're all superb to read! I also love the idea of a 'common sense' pill - but what happens if you take an overdose?

Great work Chris, love the rhythm in this piece. I would like to see you do a serious and emotional piece again .You're good with the humour etc and I enjoy them. Yet my favorite piece of yours is "peace removen" even though you had to explain some parts to me, I understood it and loved the twist and seriousness in it. Please, I would love to see something like that again, fiction or non-fiction which ever you perfer. I felt that piece brought the best out of you.
P.s. looking through your work, sauna was flipping deep lol, funniest shit I have ever read. Simple yet kept me reading. I don't undertand why nobody commented on that. I would have but I didn't know you existed back then.

This is song like - I love it Chris. The rhythm really helps the words along, doesn't fight with them at all. Great stuff:)

Thanks Magic; an overdose of common sense? I don't know, I suppose you can have to much love (depending on the context), I believe that you can have to much money...can't figure out how to much common sense could be bad. Maybe it's a case of; better to much than not enough ;)

Hey Pinda, I tend to get serious in small bursts and with great effort lol...but I'll give it a go.
Glad you liked 'Sauna'. I got that piece out of going to the gym with my super-fit son; nearly killed me. I followed him into the cold shower on the way out and nearly had a fecking heart attack lol; he nearly bust his nuts laughing at me.
Sometimes I get loads of comments for pieces that I may not really think deserve them and other times....maybe it just didn't hit the funny bone in others that it hit in me LOL. My sense of humour can be a bit weird at times; glad you enjoyed it anyway.
Thanks for the comments Pin, much appreciated. ;)
