We sat and drank;
just me and Frank,
sitting there,‘Old Blue Eyes’ and me,
in a pub just off the Old Kent Road;
double Jameson and Jack D.
Ava, she swam
in every dram;
I could see it there in his face.
He pushed the Trilby further back;
‘Damn Kid, this is some rat race!’
‘Hey kid’, he says,
‘in the old days;
the heights that we reached were so rare,
when Sammy still had both his eyes
and I still had my hair.’
‘The Vegas Strip;
man, what a trip,
there was Sammy, Deano and me.
We packed em in, they loved us then
the drink and dames were free’
‘We were like kings,
they kissed our rings;
oh man, didn’t we have a spree.
We’d balls of brass and kicked some ass,
from here to eternity!’
‘Three musketeers;
we had no fears,
with friends like the young J.F.K.
Sometimes, Joey and Pete came too
some claim ‘The Mob’ had a say’
‘You know we thought
time could be bought,
the only way there was, was up!
Thought we’d never – I mean ever
be holding an empty cup.’
‘The wheel was spun
and we all won
and we raked in stack after stack.
Fortune and fame and that stupid name
they christened us; The Rat Pack!’
‘Kid, it’s been great
but hey, it’s late
and there’s someplace else I should be.
I been yakkin’, just like a dame
The guys are waiting for me.’
‘I gotta go,
we got a show;
this is a special type a thing.
They say that it’s hot - but so what
ain’t the first time we played for a king.
‘See ya round Kid!’
He shrugged and slid
from the stool and went on his way.
The door closed, I thought I heard him;
‘Hey Kid, I did it my way!’

Know what you mean Val, I think the 'bad boy' image of Sinatra appealed to me and I loved Deano (he always got the girl). As for Tony Bennett, jeez, he must be nearly a hundred years old; he played Ireland not too long ago. I don't know what he is eating, drinking, sniffing or injecting but I want some of it lol. Thanks for reading.

Liked this a lot, Chris. As with most of your writes, the words jump off the page, almost.
'My Way' now there's song...like it, or loathe it. As a matter of fact, it's my other half's favourite one;-)

This is great! The rhythm is almost infectious, if you know what I mean, and the rhyme works really well in this piece. This is a poem with a personality ;-)
Well done.
Nathan.

This is well put to-gether
and I had a little laugh!
Only one blue eyes wasn't the
Sinatra had it all but was laid back
songs full of emotions. Women loved.
But strange long friend mine in 7O Whoops!
Sings like Sinatra wow all ages! Name is Frank.
You have blended this all so extremely well
Loved verse
The wheel was spun and we all won
and we raked in stack after stack
Fortune and fame
and that stupid name
they christened us The Rat Pack!
I have and most of his songs
"When somebody loves you.
My way. and so on.

Thanks Julie, glad that you liked. Whether you like him or hate him, he was a legend who spanned more than one generation. I would have 'grown' to appreciate his particular talent later, having read a couple of biographies. I got interested in the man before the music I suppose. I appreciate all kinds of music having come from a musical family and having played and sung myself. The guy was actually 'pitch perfect'; not a talent that every performer has!
Thanks for your comments ;)

Hey folks, just came across some writing that I think you should check out.
It's by 'superfantabulistical' (check out 'Captive' and tell me I'm wrong).
MistakenMagic | August 3, 2009 - 08:39
Totally agree with Nathan - a poem with personality couldn't have put it better myself. I think I might end up talking in this rhythm - it is infectious ;)
