Siren!!

from the ABC set WILD

Mercedes-Benz fire engines in the bleak-deserted half-dark hangars are patiently waiting in echoes, polished to mirrors. A few men are still playing at cards and darts, there’s a chess game going. The Doors, coffee and cigarettes. The others are sleeping.

Siren!!

The whole fire-station is alive within seconds. Men run all over the place like mad ants. Each man knows exactly his job. They grab helmets - torches - safety jackets - fire-gear. Scrambling around everywhere running like there’s no tomorrow.

Some men start getting into trucks. Powerful Deutz diesel-engines jump to life one after the other, red lights start turning and turning the fire-sirens are wailing. They trip on a frenzy of shadows and lights: Red-bright flash-flash silver-shine dark and light! Red-white shine-silver flash-flash red and bright!

The hangar doors roll open slowly and the first trucks are on their way shiny new-black truck-tires squealing on polished cement. From far hear the warning! Hooters! Deep as fog-horns! Paaaap! Paap!

High! Adrenalin!

Fire engines go wailing down the road one after another. Fire! Make way make way! Horns! Sirens! Fireworks! Sirens! Everywhere lights flashing! A grand dance or some great celebration!

Far-off in the distance the deep horns disappear into the peaceful night.

Paaap paap! Paaaap paap!

Make way make way make way!

Fire!!

Lovely! Beautiful! I love fire-lorries I've always loved big shiny red
fire-lorries. Wish I could drive a lorry like that Tom!

So do I! Most of my friends were firemen. I wasn’t. It's a noble profession, selfless work if ever there was. Men of courage each one.

See you brother!

I’m forgiven?

I think it’s the Fire-Brigade I think it’s supposed to be a kind of medal. Maybe you’re a mascot.

Cheers Tom!
