Home to Oblivion
By the unfolding head

How many times each week
do heartbeats skip
when these two meet?
Every day
as we reach dusk
and I approach the subway
were the beggars busk
I pass their rendezvous place
- a bus stop
with a patient pace
She approaches
and he waits
A quiet kiss
a knowing look
another page
in their romantic book
another page
today is turned
a love this sweet
I’ve yet not learned
His ivory skin
in contrast with hers
politely he caresses
her warm coat of furs
and her ebony cheeks rise
as she cracks a grin
and I wonder
how could a love like this
have ever been mistaken,
for a sin?
The jesters of play
make fun and walk by
but not me
no
I’m transfixed
by the look
- so true in their eyes
And I now step slowly
as I reach this mark
watching them meet
to catch a carriage and embark
on a journey home
- wherever home may be
some call it oblivion
others say eternity
And I feel moved to have noticed
their daily clinch
should I find a moment like this of my own
I will not flinch
I will not disbelieve the dream
squeeze my skin awake with pinch
instead
I will remember
the infectious feeling I caught
the true depth of companionship
that cannot be bought
And if I ever find bliss
- and chance won’t make me wait
too long
well
then
I hope someone else notices
and witnesses
my verse
in the endless
life love song
