My sister moved from the farm to the city and was content for years
to be away from her roots. Living in an unincorporated part of town and
with a very large back yard she decided to buy a pair of ducks.
These ducks were loud always quacking they were she said her pets. They
lived happily in the yard, eating their bugs and corn and swimming in
the pool she bought for them.
One day she went out to take them their corn and to refill the pool
with clean water. She found the mama duck dead the papa duck was
walking around looking up at the sky. After removing mama she filled
the pool, put the corn in the usual spot and went back into the
house.
She went out to feed papa the next day and noticed that he wasn't
eating or swimming in his pool. He might be sick she thought, and
decided to keep an eye on him. Next few days he ate very little, didn't
swim at all and walked around all day looking at the sky. Maybe he's
lonesome, I guess i had better get him another mate.
The place where she bought the ducks were out of mama ducks. Since he
was lonely she bought another male for company. Now she had two papa
ducks that went around all day looking up at the sky, eating very
little and looking sickly. Not knowing what to make of this she called
the vet to ask what to do.
You have to have a female duck he said they don't know what to do
unless they are told by the female.
Calling everywhere she finally found a mama duck. As soon as she sat
mama down in the yard, she started quacking instructions at the males
and everything returned to normal. They followed her every move when
she ate, they ate when she swam they swam.
It was the most amazing thing I ever saw she said, I think they must be
a lot like men. They can make it just fine if they never get around a
female. But if they do find their mate they just stop thinking and let
her handle it.
