Teched In The Head
When someone was not all there mentally folks would say they was teched
in the head. The old people that lived down the road from us was
raising their Grandson. His name was Alvin, he was sixteen years old,
and he was teched in the head.
All the kids teased me constantly about Alvin. They said he's sweet on
you jean, we asked him and he said he was. Every time I saw him he
would stare at me, and rub his hands together, and grin. He wore big
thick glasses that made his eyes look almost as big as saucers. I was
afraid of Alvin.
When my dad started the pick up truck, I was right there to go too. He
always stopped at Alvins house to ask them if they needed him to pick
something up for them at the store. They didn't have a car, they walked
and it was a long way to the country store.
We stopped there so often I guess, Alvin thought I was coming to see
him. Daddy made me go inside with him to say hello and be polite.-- Cat
had kittens wanna see em?-- No I seen kittens before Alvin.-- Come on
go look at em he kept insisting.-- Go on look at the cats Jean we got
to go hear in a minute.
The cats were in the shed out back. Alvin opened the door and as I
started in he grabbed me from behind, put his hand over my mouth, and
dragged me into the bushes. I was nine years old and small for my age.
I was scared to death.
He was fumbling at his clothes with one hand and had his other hand
over my mouth, his knee was in my stomach. His eyes looked dazed and
wild like a trapped animals, darting back and fourth, spit hanging out
of his mouth.
I heard my Dad calling my name, Jean we got to get going, you can come
back and see them kittens some other time. All of a sudden Alvin
stopped, stood up, pulled me to my feet, brushed the leaves off my
dress. He grabbed me by the throat, picking me up off my feet and
said,-- If you tell I'll kill you!-- And I never did.
I know now why some kids don't tell when things happen to them. If you
had seen his face, I believed every word he said. I had nightmares for
a long time after that happened. When the old man died, Alvin and his
Grandma moved away somewhere. finally I could live without being scared
all the time.
