Interrogation
Orwell weighed up the metric and imperial
Considering that sometimes the two were one
He made O'Brien wave his stubby fingers at me
And ask the question, to which I answered
Christ, I know! No, I don't know
I just don't
Then setting life aside, I pondered, at a possible riposte
And thus:
Waver 'twixt radical and standard depiction
But please, please, don't attempt to write fiction
And further:
You were translucent, see-thru, a nonentity, an insubstantial
bore
One day a whole, the next a half, thereafter a quarter, then whole
again
One day free the next in prison
A self-dividing, self-fracturing, self-deprecating organism
As you were between protestant and catholic, neither one nor the
other
Be unlike More, recant
And rejoin the human race
So I sat, and read, in conservatoire
Drinking espresso and smoking a cigar
Interrogation II
Wood-pulp exhortations of the old oak tree
Carbon-like, you see, back to source
Then rebounding, incessantly, like grubs
I slowed down, played it cool
'Cos it was depressing me too much
