Baby Seals (with a kiss)

from the ABC set Poems

Far warmer than fur garments
is that fuzzy glow I feel;
that happiness that hugs my heart
when I see baby seals.

My heart falls into their warm eyes;
as bright as stars in the North Pole
and it’s so hard not to surmise
that, maybe, baby seals have souls.

Yes they are small darlings aren't they! Long Live Brigitte Bardot and Greenpeace...

Thanks, pia.

It may be a bit too sentimental but I thought of it as a Christmas/Seasonal poem.

Certainly, long live Bardot the actress/sex symbol and animal rights activist. Shes been accused of holding alot of far right, nationalist views and of homophobia but I don't know to what degree those accusations are true. It would be pity if they were.

Baby seals need to be cuddled. I'm all for cuddling baby seals and rubbing their little baby noses. A living baby seal is infinitely more beautiful than any fur coat could ever be.

Thankyou, Jenny. I deliberately avoided writing a darker poem about seals being killed because I really wanted to write something happier to fit in with the season however I think that portraying the beauty of the seal is as important as portraying the tragedy of its murder.

Lovely little poem.

Seals, like foxes, are very beautiful creatures, but if we get too chummy with them this will lull them into a false sense of security about human beings, many of whom are vicious bastards...

Personally, I think that being chummy with an animal is more likely to teach it that not all humans are vicious bastards and when it does encounter vicious humans it will still have the memory of kindness.

I also think that trust can be as essential for survival as suspicion. Sometimes trusting is the right thing.

It's like a child who grows up only knowing cruelty and abuse; they get the idea that cruelty is the norm
and that the world is just a dark, miserable place. Show them some kindness and they'll have a more positive view of life and may even do kindness to others rather than just becoming another dog in a dog eat dog world.

But I'm very glad that you liked my poem and I agree that Foxes are beautiful. Thankyou very much
Archie.
