The Best Of Me (Country & Western Song Lyric)

from the ABC set Lyrics

I didn’t do right before you met me.
I’ve got a history that’s longer than my arm
but I will do right if you just let me
be the man to keep you happy, safe and warm.

You’re not my first one but you’re the worst one
for digging deep into my loving heart
and you can trust me that I’m just bursting
to turn a leaf and make a brand new start.

Lord, it’s not easy but I am tryin’
to be the best man that I can be.
Lord, it aint easy but I aint lyin’
because your love has got the best of me.

Now I can picture myself growing old
with only one woman beside me night and day.
You are the only one I want to hold
as our skin starts to wrinkle and our hair turns grey.

And, to the end dear, I am determined
to be a better man than I have ever been;
the kind of man whose truly deservin’
to call himself your husband and call you his queen.

Lord, it’s not easy but I am tryin’
to be the best man that I can be.
Lord, it aint easy but I aint lyin’
because your love has got the best of me.

Excellent lyrics. Are you going to set it to music? Do you have a melody in your head? I quite like country music, and other styles that are fused with it. Do you listen to Bob Harris?

Thanks, Sue. I had a tune a bit like "You are my sunshine" in my head when I was writing the lyrics.

I suppose I could come up with a tune for it since alot of old country songs only had about three or four chords in them.

I used to watch Bob on the Old Grey Whistle Test but so far I haven't caught his radio programme.

I've always liked Country music. Particularly
Hank Williams, Bobbie Gentry, Dolly Parton, Nancy Griffiths and 50's Country singers like Patsy Cline and Brenda Lee.
