Exit The Labyrinthe

from the ABC set Poems

The light
of Knos-
sos lies
beyond.

Where we,
like Dae-
dalus,
shall fly

Or like
Icar-
us shall
plummet

But at
least have
tried to
touch the
sun.

Tried to unfold our wings;
broad as the plumed tamarisk,
and soar, like the plover, over everything.

Fear not
the min-
ute min-
otaur.

Dreaming
head like
blooming
Chaste tree.

Fear not
the ty-
rannous
Minos.

Instead,
follow
the thread
of dreams that leads into the light of day.

-----------------------------------------------

Note: The tamarisk, plover and Chaste tree (a flower) have been picked because, apparently,
they're common sights in Crete.

I have been to Crete- stayed in a little harbour town called Xania- it was way back in the mid- seventies so there weren't so many turists. It was such a beautiful holiday and a really beautiful island. I remember the lemon trees were blooming- ah lovely.
Nice little poem- love the structure. We learnt a lot of greek Mythology in school, very interesting.

Thankyou very much, Pia.

I've always wanted to write a poem that used enjambment to represent turning corners and a Labyrinthe seemed appropriate.

Cut and pasted from Wiktionary:

"A technique in poetry whereby a sentence is carried over to the next line without pause"

Hope that helps.
