Little Lucy And The Debt Collector

from the ABC set Poems

Where is your daddy, little girl?
Tell me, is he at home today?
Where is your daddy, little girl?
You know, he has some debts to pay.

He’s often in the bookies, sir;
and tearing up a betting slip;
a sour look upon his face
because some fillies lost a race.

He is not in the bookies, dear.
I’ve checked and he has not been there.
Where else does daddy like to go.
He’s deep in debt. I need to know.

He’s often in the Lions Head;
downing pint after pint of beer
until he comes back home again
with a big grin from ear to ear.

I went into the Lion’s Head
and had a word with the landlord
and I’ve been told he’s not been seen.
So tell me now, girl,spill the beans.

Perhaps he’s with that woman then.
The one he turned to after mother
passed away. He says they’re ‘friends’
they’re certainly fond of each other.

Mary Kelly? The young widow?
I know her well, as most men do.
He came ‘consoling’ her today
but wasn’t in the mood to stay.

Then sir, I really do not know
where my dear daddy can have gone.

Well. If you see him, little girl,
please, can you pass this message on?

‘This is your final reminder.
You better pay up soon or else.’
See that he gets that message dear;
It is for the good of his health.

‘You better pay up soon or else?’,
yes, I will try and remind him.
Goodbye, sir and the best of luck.
I really hope you can find him.

Come out now, Daddy! It’s O.K.
The nasty man has gone away.
I said what you told me to say.
Are we still going on holiday?

I like this one well-wisher - love the way the sing-song rhythm contrasts with the subject matter

A good one, well-wisher and worthy of the cherry.
Well done.

Thanks for the cherry and the comments. I have to admit that I hadn't thought about it as deeply as Blighters Rock because it was partly based upon my own experience with debt collectors and my own father
aswell as my love of british childrens poems like "Albert and the lion"

Ah, well-wisher - right up my street, this one! By a very strange coincidence I have just heard 'Albert and The Lion' for the first time less than an hour ago and have turned into some kind of S. Holloway geek now, he's great ;o)

Well done on the cherries, this is brilliant,

Rachel xx

Lovely rhythm and tone. It feels like an uncovered gem from the fifties - which I mean as a compliment!
