Rescue Dog

from the ABC set Yutka's poems

Sensing the danger he is in,
he feels the flames grow in his wake.
In boundless leaps he runs to win
the fight head-on, the lead he'll take.

You'll never know what he will find
beneath the rubble ' now he'll crawl
into the holes, sniff if to dredge,
while underground his playground's smell

is to him near a lover's pledge.
He'll wear his collar with its bell
proudly as for a fashion call.
He's barking at death's edge.

His tongue runs wild, his eyes, red rimmed,
he digs in frenzy for a child.
A foot protrudes, a hand that waves,
and brims with fear, a voice: I'm here!

He is called back, lies down to rest
but not for long, his work goes on.
He digs and battles until late,
no stopping, for death cannot wait.
