It was elves. Elves were cheaper than robots are now. So they employed them instead of humans. Watch your tense. You tend to move from present to pass tense and back again. |No biggy, but keep an eye on it.

nothing like a bit of existential angst. This world is meant to be a shadow of the next. Nostalgia is a bit like that. When we were young the world didn't glitter, but it seemed realer. Perhaps as we get older we live more inside our expectations...
