Silent sounds IP

Once I didn’t have to do this
But I turn up the volume to
Maximum pitch
I know the neighbours won't mind
2nd movement, my favourite
I remember all the tones
The strings, the wind instruments
They are quite soft though dramatic
The majestic spaces- wide open
Pioneer country
I feel the beat and rhythm in my feet
In my stomach
My mind starts to wander over the plains
The wind touching the tall grass
Pilgrim footsteps, imprints on the New World
Wagons driven by strength and will
A new awakening
My fingers tap the armrest
My eyes closed, so as to concentrate
on listening with my whole body
My heart seems to beat with the music
Once I heard it quite clearly
Two decades as a welder
in the shipyards
Now I feel the music

Very evocative this, Pia, as evocative, possibly, as the piece of music the narrator is listening to.

I loved these lines, especially:-

"My mind starts to wander over the plains
The wind touching the tall grass
Pilgrim footsteps, imprints on the New World
Wagons driven by strength and will..."

An excellent take on this week's IP.

Tina;-)

I think this describes very well the way in which Classical music transports you to another place with its landscapes of sound. I particularly liked:

"The majestic spaces- wide open
Pioneer country"

and

"My mind starts to wander over the plains
The wind touching the tall grass
Pilgrim footsteps, imprints on the New World
Wagons driven by strength and will"

Thank you Tina- Yes Dvorak's From the New world is one of my favourites. I'm glad you got something from my poem.
Have a sunny weekend

Thanks well-wisher- actually the listener is deaf but I know exactly what you mean. I am so fortunate as to be able to listen with my ears.

skinner_jennifer | June 11, 2011 - 13:20

Hi Pia,

I didn't actually know that the listener was deaf,
until I read it in your comment. Like you said how
wonderful to be able to hear music, but in another
way, to feel the sounds.

I cannot imagine being deaf, but you explain and
describe the feelings so well in this piece.

Congratulations on the cherries, well deserved.

Jenny.

well-wisher | June 11, 2011 - 13:37

I'm glad you explained to me, Pia, about the listener being deaf because the title of the poem
"Silent sounds" was puzzling me but now it all makes sense.

barryj1 | June 11, 2011 - 14:09

I was practicing my cornet - mostly jazz riffs and a few classical etudes - just before sitting down to read your exquisite poem. Enough said.

ScoZen | June 11, 2011 - 14:51

Highhat hello.

I liked all of this.

"...I feel the beat and rhythm in my feet
In my stomach..."

I know someone who puts his ears next to giant speakers at full volume.
Heavy rock, not Dvorak though.
Shipyard noise takes its toll after a while.

RachelPatricia | June 11, 2011 - 14:52

As Barry says, an exquisite poem indeed, Pia - well done on the cherries this is a brilliant take on the IP, very much enjoyed :)

Thanks Jenny, I have spoken to a person who is deaf and he feels the music as I have described but a better poet would do it even better.
Thanks for popping by- really kind of you.

Thanks for commenting,
once went for Tinnitus had
for few years, thought my brain gone.
Wnet wrong day, found them all the deaf
then room in most, so took course on signing,
went for tests etc; found hearing going.Well if
ever doing singing can't always hear music if loud,
but do very well. Tried digit, walked out with mine, but had to stop in park and put old one back in not
doing anymore of that make. Couldn't hear at all, they said takes approxiamtely 3 months get used digit. No back on old make. "Lady Ga Ga" taking up
signing, I forgotten most but of it. Dr used come to deaf centre talk on tinnnitus interesting. Stress, tea coffee electric cables, shock, can cause tinnitus never heard of. Mine is going deaf too, won't go.
So waits till I have taken mine out hearing aid and
calls from each room, sickening, we shout how can I hear from there. So go for tests place huge ear phones on one, press buzzer every sound, they fire in
noises, it works clowns the noise!
Have a good week-end.

Hey Highat ,
Sad and how true when we are confined to industry and its daily bombardment we end up deaf to the music of life .Oh give us ears to see and eyes to listen

insertponceyfre... | June 13, 2011 - 06:16

Pia this is beautifully expressed

Highhat | June 13, 2011 - 07:01

Dear Julie- yes I have heard about the rain in Engalnd- we have had quite a bit here as well- thunderstorms and downpours. But today the sun is shining and the morning is very peaceful. Hope likewise for you.

quiet. Bought lovley things, had win on cat's

Just messing about, trying opera, watching

Liked this very much. I think I sort of see sounds and have always been interested in how the senses cross over. You've done a brilliant job making music into a landscape. It does come across that he is deaf, that he hears the music through vibrations. Thankyou

Highhat | June 18, 2011 - 20:25

I really tried to make it obvious that he was deaf. I am so glad that you could see it. Phase2 thank you for commenting.
