A TEAR

from the ABC set THE INNER CONDITION

A tear
Just a tear
Glistening like morning dew
Hanging, unshed
In the corner of his eye.
Bright against the black circle below
Slowly it starts to move
Slowly sliding down his pale cheek
Passing through two-day stubble
Stubble he's too tired to shave.
It reaches his chin
Hovering on the precipice
Hovering just like him.

A tear
Just a tear
No others will follow
None have preceded it.
Its just a tear
Single, solitary, alone
Just like him.
Like him it is fleeting, fragile
Easy to wipe away
Easy to forget
Easy to believe it was never there.

A tear
Just a tear
Proteins and enzymes,
Lipids, metabolites, electrolytes.
It's just a tear
It's his pain, his solitude, his yearning
His yearning to be accepted
His yearning to touch other people
His yearning to be comforted.
It's just a tear
It's just everything….

Wow, you wanted to break the mould, you certainly did that! this is so heartrending and beautifully written, I'm saddened that it's partly autobiographical but also elated that you have put into such eloquent words, you certainly touched one heart today.

'Like him it is fleeting, fragile

- these lines are so beautiful, David! I really hope you experiment with free verse more often if this is the result ;) And those last two lines just say it all and much more - well done!

Lovely imagery, but sporadic punctuation interrupts the flow in places.

Hi Jennifer,

thanks for your comments, I don't usually write in this style so for future reference I would be pleased if you'd give me a few pointers punctuation wise.

Yes. I agree to could feel the emotion.
They say men never cry who-ever,good for them.
Releases pressure.I know Iv'e had boxes tissues
But to much punctuation, ties me up in knots inside.
But back again now? If it is put more plainly, like
Editor t.cook here kindly did just bit here and there.Be easier me to grasp. But Apostrophe's=done
me in.Stating that equal=that girl girl's, of schools, what is hers is girl's and boys =boy's too much for me.

Greetings David!

I found this piece particularly moving, I think it has a real honesty to it. The subject is familiar to me and your words really resonate.

....with my best wishes

Thank you Paul, both for reading and for commenting. The autobiographical stuff in the "The Inner Condition" are all written from the heart and it is comforting that people like yourself can enjoy them and maybe draw something from them.
