Mother thought the time was right
Packed her bags
Prepared the flight
Yet as she wandered round the house
Oh so quiet as a mouse
Wasted years came flooding back
Damn near knocked her off her track
It made her stop
It made her think
A lifetime of a man and drink
Does she dare?
Does she care?
Did she care?
Will she dare?
The door it does a beckon
But …
Mother’s rooted to the spot
The fear of life without him
On the landscape is a blot
Tiny steps are needed
As courage takes a dive
Mother’s slowly disappearing
A ghost that’s barely still alive
Room to room she wanders
Trapped in a bygone age
Dreaming of a life not lived
Outside her unlocked cage
Mother starts a doubting
Thinks …
That now’s too late
Thinks …
Who would really want her now?
She’s old
She’s overweight
Best years are behind her
Buried in his years
Mother’s dreams are fading fast
Soon …
They completely disappear
Mother thought the time’s not right
Unpacked her bags
Cancelled the flight
And as she wandered round the house
Oh so quiet as a mouse
The wasted years come flooding back …

Hello Lady-Bathsheba,
This was quite a personal poem to me, as I have
actually left two husbands. It does take alot of
courage to walk out on a marriage. But I'm glad I
did, because although I went through alot of hardship, I have never been happier than I am now,
and have a wonderful partner.
Sorry to ramble, but this poem brought back all those
memories. Anyway I thought it was sad, but interesting.
Jenny.

Thanks Jenny and congrats for getting out .... I know that it takes a huge and courageous leap of faith to leave a partner and I aplaud anyone for taking responsibilty for themselves ie going into the unknown ... scary ... Take care and thanks for taking the time to read and comment -:)
It is always appreciated -:)

I think this is very good as well- but I can also understand the mother a bit. It does take immense courage to break away and well done for those who make it- into the unknown and new.

This poem is amazing, i've never been in a position like it and i therefore can't fully emphasise but it still evoked emotion. Its just brilliant in the way you've outlined the major problem of all relationship troubles: the inability to walk away and the dilemma of loving too much to leave but hating too much to stay. I loved the line: "A ghost that’s barely still alive." Just the contrast within it really emphasises her life and persona within this marriage. Great poem :D

This poem speaks to many women. The prevarication comes across so well.........will she, won't she, can she, can't she? Well expressed.
