I don't want to share Amanda Palmer

from the ABC set Spunky doggerel

I was making you a birthday CD.
I asked if you'd heard Amanda Palmer
you said no
and I knew you'd like her
but I couldn't quite bring myself
to add one of her songs to the playlist.

Instead I put on a Blur slowy
something safe.
The first time I heard Amanda Palmer
I thought of you straight away
and I guess I always thought we'd listen to her together
and now I don't want to share her.

I still think maybe we'll wake up together
one morning months from now
and I'll say 'Hey you still haven't heard Amanda Palmer'
and I'll press play and we'll listen to Ampersand
and Blake Says and The Point of it All,

and you'll look at me and it'll be like
when you made me that CD ages ago
that had Joanna Newsome and Yeah Yeah Yeahs
and Nina Nastasia
and I listened to it by myself on the train
and wished you were there

that it was something we could share
So maybe one day we'll listen to Amanda Palmer together
and I'll say
'Yeah I thought you'd like it'
and we'd google for gigs
wait for her to perform at a town near us
and until she announced a tour
we'd be just listen to the album
over and over again.
But for now I don't want to share Amanda Palmer
you still haven't heard her
but maybe one day, you will.

Never heard of her but I know the feeling. I like the way the subject's used to illustrate that paralysis that creeps up in the early days of getting to know someone well. Very impressive.

This is really good - I often have second thoughts about sharing music with others, it's a tricky business.

And Nina Nastasia? You have excellent taste :)
