Where else, if not here

Where else, if not here
I stick a pin in a map. My future will be determined by where it lands. I have five goes.

1. Saint Lucia
I'm at a cricket match. Men with dreadlocks do the conga round the boundary as the score reaches 500. I join them, someone passes me a trumpet. I play it and try not to spill my rum.

2. Sheffield
I can get a bus to my mum and dad's from here. I look on gumtree, see if anyone has a spare room. I send out emails. Research local pubs.

3. Somalia
I work for the Red Cross. I open the van doors. Blankets, clothes, bottled water. I am greeted like Santa at a primary school on the last day of term. The daughter of the local minister says 'so you dedeciate your life to helping others?' I nod, as nonchalantly as buying a Twix at a petrol station.

4. Austria.
I teach at the university. I have a cottage in the Vienna woods. I celebrate my 30th birthday on a boat on the river with my Viennese bride. We share a bottle of Champagne. When it's empty we throw it over the side. The Danube ripples like a love heart.

5. Sheffield again.
The map is trying to tell me something. I pack a bag. It would be too hot in Saint Lucia anyway. I'd probably get sunburnt.
