The archaeologist, her hands red with earth,
finds our words buried deep within dust and dirt.
They have slipped so far into the soil;
they are almost archaic.
Carefully, she retrieves the fragments -
some sharp, glint like spears:
words born of an unrequited love.
Others smooth - seem new - curved in (false) hope.
The shades of clay vary.
The darker, heavier pieces - mine.
Crushed smaller with the pressure;
but our passing was never going to be easy.
The lighter, larger ones yours.
You fought the agony admirably -
always the stronger one. You kept
it together better than I ever could.
And so the pieces are fitted into poetry -
or something beautiful. Not pots or pans
... maybe patterned vases, coloured
to the brim with our voices.
They are shipped off to a museum somewhere;
because love does not change with time -
this mosaic of words needs to be heard ...
our warning to the rest of the world.

This is exquisite - I totally agree with Tony. Each reading brought new meaning and it was easy to lose myself in the words and the thoughts. I think there is something just so beautifully poignant about this: it echoes with the warnings of love and yet there is a tenderness to it...a feeling that even in the destruction it was still utterly worth it. The second time I read it I read the last two verses aloud and there was a gloriously ageless quality to the words that sounded almost like an incantation. Beautiful poetry and I suspect I shall return again for more readings!

So very well done on this one, Magic. It is a little gem as Tony says and many congrats on the cherry and on the Facebook and Twitter front as well, of course.
One my of my many favourites of yours without a doubt;-)

And secondly, thank you for such a detailed and praising comment. It has to be one of the best reviews I've ever received! This poem is one of my personal favourites and very close to my heart - so thank you.
'a feeling that even in the destruction it was still utterly worth it' - all I will say is you don't know how right you are about that ;)
Hope to see you around again soon!

Another Masterpiece from Magic, I think we're all in agreement. :P
The last line, 'Our warning to the rest of the world' was by far my favourite part, in such a magnificent poem.
I found the feelings of preservation and destruction playing against each other in the poem to be excellent :D
Another fantastic piece,
Liam ~

love this one magic, the vase imagery, Plato said something about vases, souls, and love..might have to go find a poem about that. Always like how you reveal story through images and ideas -and as you/we find similar images, its always magic reading you! Lots to this poem, but easy to read, makes reader want to read over. Enjoyed :)x

Hello ld! Your comment has got Keats' 'Ode to a Grecian Urn' stuck in my head ;) Glad you like this one and you're right we too tend to pick imagery from the same image pool!

Another perfectly crafted, beautiful and touching piece of work by MistakenMagic. So glad this was the twitter/facebook pick. I love how you've intertwined different elements and it all comes together so perfectly. I mean this is something I can imagine a couple of years onwards people will be picking apart on an English lit course.
MistakenMagic | July 6, 2010 - 15:59
Thank you, Maggy! You know that was the last thing my English teacher said to me before I left school - that she hoped my poetry would become part of the GCSE syllabus! ;)

This is one of the best poems I have ever read Magic I enjoyed this greatly. I love archaeology so this was perfect for me. I adore the juxtapositioning of the different layers of clay and what that meant. Well done on the cherry I think this deserves a whole bunch! You're amazing Magic. :)
MistakenMagic | July 7, 2010 - 07:22
Beeme, people like you are the reason I get up in a morning! Thank you SO much for such a wonderful comment - I'm so glad you enjoyed this one! And you know you're an amazing poet too - I can't stop going back to your love poetry ;)

I think the others have said it all. Very good evocation of the way in which at least some things can last which is more than can be said for anything on the internet. So I suppose you could call it an expression of permanence in a defiantly non-permanent medium, if you want to take it down the concept art route ... Well done!
