Winter Solstice

from the ABC set Silver Spun Sand Poems

Chasing sleep, I tread
the boards. A sickle moon
shreds the clouds...
bleeds liquid silver
over valley and fields.

The night passes slowly...
darkness, offers respite
only to the flowers; pansy
and morning glories, yet none
for me, as hidden in a log-pile,
a badger sleeps.

This year is dying – let us
welcome in the next. Light
candles until the dawn;
burn beseeching bonfires
to swallow up the darkness.

Days will start to lengthen
and, of an evening,
I shall sit in the lee
of the stately Scots Pine –

watch a sprinkling of stars
fall through its blue-green
arms...to the other side
of the sky.

That's perfect. Mind you don't burn a badger!

SSS, If you could give a brief appraisal on my latest I would be obliged.

"A sickle moon shreds the clouds" is priceless. Such imagery; another fine writing. Richard LP

Dear Tina,

this has definitely got to be one of my favourites
of yours. So hauntingly beautiful and so much about
everything I love.

Thankyou, so...so much for writing this one and
sharing it. One that will linger with me for a long
time.

Jenny.

Thanks, so much for your welcome enthusiasm, Jenny. I much appreciate it, on this dark and rainy Decmember evening.

So pleased you enjoyed so much, and this near to Christmas, your taking time out from all the preparations to tell me, is really nice;-)

This really put me in a Spring mood Tina- it's so nice that the shortest day has come and gone now. I thought your poem was so beautiful- so many well described images- every line is beautiful. I celebrated Winter Solstice by drinking a 'heathen' beer.

Hi there, Pia...yes, it is nice to know that the darkest day is behind us now, and we can start looking forward to the nights drawing out.

Pleased you liked this one, and I trust you enjoyed your beer;-)

Was that a drovers scots pine? :) it was 5.30 on the 21st, I missed the celebrations again, the badgers probably noticed though! Now I have to get ready for planting, my garden is growing! K

I think you are right about the Drovers pine, Kahdai. Good luck with your planting;-)
