Armstrongs Butcher’ Shop
By Paul McCann
Walking into Armstrongs butchers
as a child gave me a strange feeling
with the butchers holding knives
and cattle halves hanging from the ceiling .
They were always friendly and shared a joke
with all the folk in the shop
but all the while all I could do
was stare at all the cows hanging up .
Then I wondered how they got up there ,
hanging one by one all in a row .
Everyone who came in there ,
were able to see Armstrongs dead meat show .
I used to think ,
how could anybody carry that cow home with them ,
they looked so heavy and to carry
it would take half a dozen men .
Then I realised
all the butchers who worked in there
were called Armstrong .
That’s how the cows got hung up
and delivered ,
in the town I came from .
.
