“I’ll stay awake
and keep so quiet
and see them bring
those things and fill
my stocking up …
I know they’ll wait until all’s quiet
and they think I’m sleeping, slow deep breathing …
and then I’ll bounce up, give them a shock
(or shall I just wait and look when they’ve gone?
not spoil their fun)…
now how to stay awake?
I’ll think up stories, or do some sums,
I’ll put a knobbly lorry under me in bed …
I’ll wriggle my toes, and do some exercises … …
where has the darkness gone –
and there’s a full stocking –
when did they come?”

Thank you! I hope you had a peaceful, happy time too.

Our familly have always held the tale as a happy fun tale, but the children still loved some of their presents being brought in in the night – but they knew who to thank! I had strong memories of being annoyed that my parents had lied to me, and I gather these days many parents who foster children find they have to be wary of that too. But our children were aware that their contemporaries in early school believed it, for a while. Rhiannon

on the face of it, it is quite a frightening thought isn't it? A strange man is going to break into your house and come into your bedroom and leave you something. I was talking about it to my youngest son recently and he said he didn't completely believe it quite early on, but still enjoyed the delight of the magic

Yes, my children liked to have the pretend, and excitement fun, and the collection of little things in a stocking/bag. I don't suppose those young think of the 'starnger' aspect especially as he's supposed to be so perfect and jolly! But I know a number who have felt unsettled about being taught it as truth, maybe partly because the/I helt a bit stupid for having been gullible! Rhianno

Oh, thank you. I'm glad you enjoyed! Especially as it was you I think chose the IP, and at first I thought I didn't have any idea for that and then I remembered watching a day or two ago my grandchild watching a 'Topsy and Tim' episode where they want to stay awake for the so-called'Tooth Fairy', and so I started thinking from that …! An effective measure but maybe a bit drastic. I'd have probably gone for a couple of bits of Lego.

Our Father Chrismas was exactly the same,  tree, and pillow cases by the bed for the presents. No sleep! My late father made a really big thing of christmas I miss those days. What I find suprising is how close the custams are with you so very far away  & Nolan

Christmas time, both the spiritual celebrations and the present-giving and special meal do draw families together and help to calm frictions, hopefully! I suppose the customs associated with Christmas came with the settlers migrating from England, Holland and other parts of Europe? Rhiannon

Maybe, but I would say much rather films radio and television. Copy-cats everywhere. It is incredible in general what influence America has on society already just by itself.
