Has Nurse Brannigan Made a Full Recovery?

I remember someone saying “See you in the canteen” I think it was Staff Nurse Garrity…I remember red hair. Then I remember something about being short staffed…that was Sister Linguard, I think. She told me to go and feed and change all the babies in the nursery for the new mothers, the ones that had to have Caesars and were too poorly to look after their babies. She asked me if I could manage. I said yes so she hurried away saying something about an extra ward round and that she needed me to be quick. I remember her shoes squeaking as she walked away and there was another noise. What was it? I can’t remember …yes, I know... it was the wonky wheel on the tea trolley. I remember smelling disinfectant and medication too, they sort of mingled together…I never liked that smell especially in the early morning. It made me feel sick.
I didn’t like the smell of the new babies either. I could smell blood as I walked into the nursery and that made me feel sick too.
I had to be quick…Sister had said.
So I started with the baby by the door. It was a boy. I knew it was a boy because it had a blue blanket. The next one was a girl she had a pink blanket. I tried to be quick but some of them wouldn’t let me…they kept crying …it made my head ache.
I kept telling myself I had to be quick.
Sister would be angry if I wasn’t quick. Everyone seemed to be angry with me these days. I don’t know why?
Sometimes I feel angry and I don’t understand why?
Sometimes I feel sad. The doctor said he would give me something that would make me feel better. But I don’t…feel better.
I want to go home. Perhaps if I’m quick Sister will let me go home.
So I started to hurry.
Then suddenly the door flew open just as I was finishing.
“All done?” said Sister.
“Umm…yes…I think so” I said.
“Well have you or haven’t you?”
She seemed cross.
“All fed?”
“Yes Sister, and I’ve changed them all too” I said, thinking she would be pleased, as I replaced the last little identity bracelet!
