Remembering that sense of

mystery, recalling woodland

swathed in wild childhood

memory;

 

amid flowing passage of

time, wondering if trill

congregation of birds are

gathered on bendy limbs,

 

branches appear to stoop

lifting nature's spirit; where

in copse symbol is blessed by

meandering stream;

 

this gentle splashing over

rocks, displaying reflected

ripple of sky gives ease in

sheltered atmosphere;

 

as late Spring's blossom of

Hawthorn alongside grassy

bank, resembles fair bride's

veil blown wispy on soft breeze.

 

I would again return to daisy

chains...while with friends,

imagining boarding our woody

dens – ships sailed beneath

tall trees and summer never

seemed to end.

Oops! Thank you insert for letting me know about the spelling mistakes, I've now put them right.

Summers always seem so much longer when your young. Being lucky enough to have the woods right at the bottom of our garden was such a bonus. The woods are always a tonic and so inspiring.

It's always a pleasure to read your comments Paul. It was a lot of fun writing this poem and remembering. I think every wood should have a stream running through it, water is important in so many ways.

Wonderfully done Jenny. There is no greater playground than the woods. I was fortunate enough to attend a primary school bordered by a strip of woodland which we were not supposed to enter but of course we did. Love, 'branches appear to stoop lifting nature's spirit'

isn't it the best feeling in the world being fortunate to be so close to nature? Like you I was lucky enough to have the woods on my doorstep, and never once felt in any danger, but then that was back in the early sixties, so I suppose times were different back then.

Wonderful memories, Jenny, and so beautifully brought to life. There are certainly times now when I would love to build a woody den and escape there for a while!

Hi airyfairy,

the memories are special and fun to look back on. Having the trees to write about is a spiritual thing for me. I know what you mean about making dens, they were fun to build and a place where adventures could begin. 

For me now it's a place of respite to just watch and listen to nature...Oh! Yes and also read a good story too.

Ah! Thank you for picking up on those lines Di. It was great to imagine being on the high sea, maybe being washed up on an island and having to make a shelter. Or the life of a pirate and burying our imagined treasure. There was no end to where we could go with our dens.

For children there are few places more mysterious and exciting than a wood. Every tree and every small clearing is a source of intrigue and adventure. And every noise is that of a wild beast coming to eat us up until we see that it's only a rabbit or a blackbird.

I'm sure these words will stay in my mind for most of today...

I would again return to daisy chains...

If only we could.

You are so right with your words Turlough, there's certainly no better place than the woods for stirring imagination.

I have to admit I wouldn't want to play in woods now, even if I was a child, times have changed and you don't really know who is lurking about, which is very sad to think of what the many children are missing out on.

Those daisy chains were always part of our life, along with treasure of unusual shaped stones and shells found at the beach from a holiday in Cornwall, or any other items we could find lurking around the house that wasn't important.
