Why am I not happy for the snow as I used to be?
Where I took every opportunity to go for a walk
in the deep white snow
I would make snow angels, build snowmen until my
fingers froze to ice
mould hideouts of snow
put a candle in the centre
and see my little son jump for joy
well wrapped in woollen clothes and mittens
Now the snow is just a bother
Theoretically I could slip and
break a bone
The bus is delayed
the train too
The snow is heavy on your boots
and your muscles ache
everything is dull and grey
even though the sun is shining
between the clouds of snow
Young people find it so romantic
and white Christmas makes
the children joyous
They seem to get the most
of the snow
They make games,
build snowmen and snowwomen
hideouts, fight ferocious snowball battles
in the snow clad fields, ski in the forests and skate on the lakes
and make snow angels
They return home warm and tired
only to start all over next day
All seems so joyless
No I don’t feel anything
No joy
only see dark skies and heavy grey clouds
even when the sun is shining
and the moon makes the
snow flakes sparkle
like diamonds
All sounds are muffled
by the blanket of snow on the ground
All I see is heavy grey clouds
outside the window
and in my mind

Oh, dear, Pia...you sound a bit like I felt this afternoon. We had about six inches of snow in just one hour and my granddaughter was supposed to be coming to open her birthday presents. I was really disappointed she couldn't make it.
Snow is beautiful, as you portray so well in your poem, but it also has its downside too.
Hope the sun comes out for you tomorrow;-)

Hi Pia,
never mind it will not belong before spring and
summer come around again, then you will be able
see this snow as just a memory.
Hope you keep warm.
Jenny.

Grown ups have different priorities. Kids just want to stay off school. We haven't had enough snow to be sled able but enough to disrupt. Puppy has only has a short run about and a short walk and is a loon. Puppy and kitten ganged up and took some lights off the tree.
But yes I dont want to break a bone either. Our local A and E is such a drag.

I saw on the news that Great Britain really has its fill of snow as well. I'm sorry about your granddaughter Tina- what a pity. Seems the climate change has shifted the weather belts a helluva lot.
Thank you for reading and your kind comment is much appreciated.

I'm hanging on for Spring and summer Jenny. Don't know why I just can't enjoy the moment and the prettiness of the snow. It's a bit sad actually.
thank you kindly for your encouraging comment and for taking the time to read.

Camilla- dogs and cats will frolic- even your puppy in the snow. Glad someone is enjoying it. Maybe there will be more so you can get your sled ride

Snow is beautiful, but can be a pain as your poem expresses. Maybe we get too caught up in one and not the other as we get older? Who knows, but Santa.
Highhat | December 18, 2010 - 18:57
Yeah Celticman- I bet Santa knows a lot about snow. I saw him last night and he manages very well with his sleigh. Lucky guy. It's my first white christmas in a such a dismal mooooood- I think it is age as you imply- shucks and bugger

I think this poem works well Pia - you've conveyed the lack of joy - not just about the snow - very effectively
Highhat | December 19, 2010 - 00:46
Thank you Insert and thanks for the cherry

Children and animals live in the moment, what a shame we lose that ability, I love snow for about 24 hours, then it becomes horrid, Hopefully the snow won't last too long for you.
Highhat | December 19, 2010 - 15:56
Shoe- it looks as though the snow has come to stay.
thank you for reading and commenting

A highly original piece, Pia - not a cliche in sight, yet this is still beautiful. Well done on the cherry :)

What's left of the snow on my return home is now piled up in a grey mass with fag butts and litter sticking out of it - this poem works for me, well done Pia and congrats on cherry.
Highhat | January 3, 2011 - 14:21
Yeah Fatboy- it has been thawing here too with lots of burnt fireworks in the remnants of the snow. But it is a while until Spring. Thanks for your lovely comment.
