Lucid Dreams In Moscow

from the ABC set Conversation With My Thirteen-Year-Old Self

I

The sky circles me, now sealed
in the grey glass of this snow globe.
I can taste something metallic in the air.

II

Golden tear drops of the Kremlin
pierce the slow hearts of the lowest clouds,
spilling a splattering of rain.

III

Looming before me, St Basil's basks in camera flashes,
with its candy-cane swirls and pretentious pastels,
I fear I may have stumbled into the wrong fairytale.

IV

Night descends on Red Square. The GUM department store
throws off a slick, glittering reflection, leaving it to stew
and swirl on the mirror of the cobbles.

V

The Novodevichy Convent bathes in spotlights,
scattering diamonds across Swan Lake -
although the last swans have long since gone.

Marvellous, Magic. Definitely one of my favourites, as I said.

Have just finished sending emails, clicked on here, and hey presto!!

A thousand and one well dones on this. As Insert says, it really is better than a photograph, even though, the ones you took were indeed magic;-)

Thank you insert! But funny you should say that as the poem was inspired by the photographs I took whilst in Moscow!

You can see some of them here:

beautiful photo, but your words do it even more justice. I love the combination of the specific, such as the sites, and the universal, like being in a snow globe.

Yes, it must be amazing. I've never been there but the poems do the job instead - perhaps even better. Rob

you're stunning mademoiselle.. you truly are.. seldom does one see so vivid and beautiful an imagery.. your words are mesmeric in every sense of the word...aesthetically, its pleasing; linguistically, its spot on; and emotionally, its vitally expressed....

MistakenMagic | June 9, 2010 - 10:44

Thank you for such a wonderful comment hellbent-savage!!! I'm speechless... it seriously means so much to me that you got so much from this one ;) Thanks again! :)
