Islands and Ferries

from the ABC set The Winter Moon

Colonsay
Eriskay,Iona,and Muck
Gigha
Harris, Canna, and Coll
Jura, Islay, Lewis, and Rum
Calmac
sails to them all

salt rimed utility
carrying jumpers and sheep
food and fables
for croft and keep

People hanker for an island life
community ceilidhs
and whiskey walking home
bottle akimbo arm around wife
yet so few people
to obscure the view
so few
hearing hammer blows of wind
booming
on cottage walls
have ye sinned, have ye sinned?

waves calling
"the ghosts of
St Kilda here
receiving? Over,
this could be St Kilda."

And the young of course get up to all sorts
sitting on the wall
behind the hall
flicking cigarette glow worms
and planning to get off

The energy here and the juxtaposition of the wild ideal with the eternal sameness of youth. I love it.

It also had a shipping forecast element and I'm sur that I reminds me of something else - superb.

Loved it - so evocative. I want to go there now just for a visit...

Most of the Calmac sailings are "disrupted" which considering the hellish weather is a fabulous understatement of what it must actually be like there at the moment.

How I don't miss being sick on the Calmac sailing out of Oban.
But I do miss the "...ceilidhs..." and "...sitting on the wall..."

Regards.
