Pumpkin and Me

from the ABC set Silver Spun Sand Poems

He senses my melancholia –
my marmalade moggy...
Breathe in the essence
of him; pine cones, and
a certain smokiness, like
some distant bonfire. Lame
in one leg...moth-eaten ears,
but home, sweet home,
to his pesky mites.

Stares me out – those eyes
the bluest of things green;
flexes his claws on my knee...
I bleed, but the merest trickle.
If only love was always
like that...It’s supposed
to hurt, I know, but
no more than just a little.

He melts into my lap,
nudging my hand
with his head – his way
of cajoling me to stroke him.
A pair of old cronies...us,
listening to the snow
as, ‘soft, it starts a-falling’.
As good as it gets, this;
of a Christmas morning.

Ah, Tina - this is beautiful!

'...those eyes
the bluest of things green'

Can't even tell you how much I love that line!

Pumpkin sounds just wonderful - really, really enjoyed this :)

Hi Tina,

like Rachel, I just wanted to go Aaaahhhhhhh! at
least I think that's how you spell it.

What an amazing, lovely piece of writing.

I adore cats and this gave me such a smile, with
memories of the cats that I've had in the past.

Hope you have a wonderful Christmas Tina and a very
Happy New Year.

Jenny.

Hi there, Jenny...

I think your 'Aaaahhhhhh' is spelt letter perfect;-)

So pleased you liked this one. I have had dogs and cats, but I have to say I am decidedly one of those 'cat people'.

Many thanks for your lovely comment and I wish you in return, a magical Christmas and a peaceful and fulfilling New Year.

Really atmospheric. Nearly went to push the cat (gently) off my knee to lean over and type this. Reminds me of 'Blue' - who wasn't blue. BTW I think the typo I mentioned on the previous poem was in my head - apologies.

Your lovely comment made me smile, PT;-) So pleased you enjoyed, and many thanks for taking the trouble.

And please don't apologise. It wasn't in your head, it really did need that comma, and I understood exactly what you meant.

Hope you have a great Christmas...and by the way, your cat sounds quite a character.

I too liked this poem, particularly the alliteration in the first two lines. I also liked your description of the cat using his head to nudge your hand to stroke him. However, for me the line I like best is "He melts into my lap..." The last three lines too are very evocative of a white Christmas.
Lovely poem, Tina. While I'm at it have a lovely Christmas.

Penandpaperdreams cites the take home lines. A super effort. Thanks.

I was going to pick out the same lines as Rachel and Scratch- they went right home. Unfortunately I get all sneezy around cats and anyway I think they shouldn't live in flats. Sounds like you are very comfortable together with Pumpkin- beautiful poem Tina.

Have a wonderful Christmas- you and Hubby and Pumpkin..
and thanks for letting me into your poetic world all year- has been a a true pleasure- am looking forward to lots more next year.

Oh he was Tina. Mischievous and very much his own cat. Picked up a lot from his environment.

Have a lovely Christmas and look forward to more from you next year.

Strange you should say that about getting sneezy. My daughter is just the same, although she had no choice but to take in a stray a few years ago now. She gets round the problem by bathing it each week, or should I say, dunking it in the sink. Apparently the allergy is something to with 'dander' on their fur. Don't worry about her cat though, he's used to it by now;-)

Thank you, so very much for your words, and for your Christmas wishes, and I return the same to you and yours.

Tina;-)
