Poetry Monthly

September’s poetry brief was so inspiring because we found poetry in our daily routines; the usual haunts where we pause or pass through were seen afresh with a scrutinising eye and some truly skewered perspectives. Refreshing is the word that emerged whilst reading. Thank you for setting us free, Bear. Here’s a roundup of some excellent found poetry:

Silver Spun Sand found those predictable gems in funeral conversations:

Bear’s failed MOT certificate had a superb rhythm all of its own:

Ed Crane chilled us with some beautifully placed political rhetoric:

 This month, love_writing leads us from one place to another with 'Roads'

 'If you don't know where you are going any road will get you there.' Lewis Carroll (1865)

This month’s theme of roads is all about the journeys we take, literally and metaphorically. There are roads which we take, those which are chosen for us, those we change direction on and those we can’t decide upon.

What does a journey, a road, mean to you? It could be a passage through life, a transition, coming of age or an actual journey taken, for instance your commute to work. Perhaps you can recall being in the back of the car as a child?

Think of a journey you have been on and what you learned about yourself, the world, and your place in it. Is it true that all journeys lead back home? Also, prose writers why not get involved?  Try a prose poem! Consider these;

  ‘The Road Not Taken,’ poem by Robert Frost (1916, From Mountain Interval)

  ‘The Journey,’ poem by Mary Oliver, (1986 in ‘Dream Work’)

Poetry Monthly has really taken off. It's rewarding to see member participation every month. Do keep it up and encourage your writing peers to give it a go because the more participation, the bigger the inspirations. If you’d like peer criticism this month, please state in a comment underneath your piece and post by October 31st. Do email me: ray@abctales.com if you have an unusual new prompt. Thank you
