I downloaded Skype yesterday and found it very easy to set up. No problems with it taking over my computer - I just unchecked the box which says open skype whenever you log on. James, mail me your number and I'll give you a call Eamonn

I don't have a skype number, but I sent my regular land line number. I'll sign up for skype myself and let you know.

Hox, Skype has two aspects: A free pc2pc voip service and a for-pay pc2phone service. There may be some other add-ons now. I've never used it myself, but a friend of mine has used it since the beginning and thinks it's great. I use Net2phone for a long-distance calls. It is a for-pay pc2phone service and pc2fax as well. It is very cheap, especially as it is billed in US dollars. Skype is billed in Euros, if you use the for-pay feature. My net2phone works extremely well, provided the originator of the call has broadband. I'm not sure how well it would work on a dialup line. There might be a way to make a small deposit in Skype to get the for-pay version and aviod the adware. then you could just use the free pc2pc facility. In any case, even if you just make a few long-distance calls and pay for them using voip, it is probably worth the money. I, for example, call someone in London once in a while. We talk for an hour, which costs me I think 4 Cents US per minute, or 60 X4 = 240 cents or just over 1.25 pounds. The full price via regular phone service would be 10X that amount. I call the US for 5 cents US per minute. Skype is probably a little more expensive because it is in Euro cents, but not much. Give it a try. I used internet telephony from an intenet cafe in Siem Reap, Cambodia, last year to call Bangkok. You can imagine the connection they had. It was not a great connection (nor was it Skype) but it worked and it was cheap. The alternative, had it been available, would have cost 30X what I paid.

I prefer Floog myself. It's less sugary.

But seriously, Hox, I'm seriously mistrustful of new technology, especially anything including the word "download". It takes a few snorts of Bleem just for me to write on this forum...

OK. Suppose some one has to look the fool, may as well be me. What the hell is Skype! Whats Floog and Bleem? No point asking if I am missing something hear...

Can you call the emergency number with it? Over here, voice over IP doesn't provide 911 service. Might come in handy if some strange bird gets loose in your house and starts pooping on everything or something.

Skype is an online telephone service or sommat like that, John. The latest in techno-whiz-bang. I'm a closet Luddite; forums are as advanced as I get. Floog I just made up. Don't know about Bleem, but I'm sure it's illegal if RadioD knows about it...

Bleem is perfectly legal in some small Mexican towns, after dark, if you have enough American cash.

Geez. It must be a new creation. I grew up near the border, and all I could score was some nice Columbian and a few kilos of snow. [and for legal purposes, I _am_ just joking. I _never_ imported it myself.]

Skype is a peer to peer voice-over-IP messenger john. There are a couple of worrying things about it, it turns your computer into a Skype node, and it's effectively both client and server, so any security hole could potentially be very bad. But there are no known security holes yet. Because it's ptp rather than going through a server it works a lot better than the alternatives. Or so I hear. Bleem is an openGL screensaver with spaceships in it, it was very impressive in it's day. not sure about Floog.

I thought all the hype (sorry) was too good to be true. But the prospect of free phone calls to other users is appealing, especially with eldest sprog at university and only available on mobile at great expense. I might give it a go. I have never bleemed, but if I did I'd use a condom just to be safe. [%sig%]
