Am wondering why anyone would want the job, given that there is not an earthly of them winning the next election - the one after, that might be a scrap. I do love that the Tories replaced their democratically elected leader with one elected effectively by David Davies being leant on/nobly advised by Michael Howard. Can't for a moment think why they would consider him any more electable than IDS - less bald, is about the only good point. Although I have read that every PM last century was taller than their opponent in the election, maybe they are just going for height - he looks tall, does Howard.

Listening to the radio this morning I heard something along the lines of: "The tory party need to take IMAGE seriously. The new leader must have sex appeal in order to be a success with the electoret."

It's more than likely that, if Labour are in danger of losing the election after next they'll introduce PR for the 2010/2011 election. If that happens the Tories could be out for a very long time.

I'm not really sure what they think the guy did wrong to be quite honest. Nelson Mandela couldn't lead the Tory party to victory at the moment. Have you seen all these relics from the Thatcher era gathered round; Norman Fowler and Cecil Parkinson etc, like remnants of a deposed junta, reminding us all of what was a really rotten period in the country's history.

I liked IDS... a decent honourable man I thought. When will people like him actually be allowed to succeed.... I think this recent episode will ensure the Tories are out for a good while longer. I wonder how many who read these boards would declare themselves as out and out Tories. Whereas I tended to Labour and probably still do... I think I am settled enough now to think I would give a politician of any ilk a good hearing... and Yes it is all about Personalities... not that old tosh about policies - nonsense to think you can separate the two.

i can't beleive how well he seemed to take it, offering to stay on, he got royally screwed by that lot of back stabbers, and took it, and is going to continue to take it... he should use some of his army skills and get some payback....

Can't spare too much sentiment on Smith, him being a Tory and all, but Michael Howard? Surely not. Tell me they're deluded, and it's not just me

IDS wouldnt win the next election or the one after that. Thats why. And neither will Howard or whoever they put in. They are so outdated that even the lib dems look good.

Never trust a Liberal. They have failed horribly everywhere they have gained power in local councils. We're in a mess, aren't we. New Labour has been in too long and is beginning to suffer from the corruption and pollution of any political party without credible opposition. Bring on PR and then we will get some Greens and radical lefties in there to give them all a kick up the backside. We'll also get the odd loony BNP MP but it's a small price to pay.
