poetry.com
Everyone knows that this site is a scam..a con that accepts any piece of poetry, good, alright or utter tripe, flatters the authors then extract money from them by charging $50 per poor quality book, trying to get them to pay to get certificates among other laughable nonsense. I'd been warned off them and would never have fallen for such a cheap trick anyway...
but...
a friend of mine has fallen. How can I tell her without sounding like I'm trying to ruin a dream or put her writing down?
all suggestions most gratefully accepted.

Suggest she visit www.binnaclepress.com and scroll down the navigation bar on the left until she comes to "Self Publishing - An Article." In this article I detail my own experiences being ripped off by this poetry scam, along with other warnings concerning vanity publishing.
Just tell her - if it were me, I'd rather know now than feel foolish later.
You can sweeten the news by saying what a shame it is, when her work is patently good enough for publication by a genuine publisher (even if it isn't) and that she should keep trying more reputable places where her work would get the audience it deserves...
Thanks guys. I was thinking in the lines of getting her to go elsewhere, but felt I really had to make sure she does and get accepted BEFORE breaking the poetry.com news to her...cos it is her first time published. I remember how chuffed I was aged 16 when I got published for the first time (By Triumph House - a very good/ honest small poetry press in the UK) -I was lucky.
Still I think Liana is right. I might save her a lot of embarrasment if I point her to that article Karl.

Lakeside Creatures
I sit by a weed with hairy leg-of-spider leaves
and fuzzy eye-of-fly buds
and ignore the orchestra of pebbles
tossed by a ten-year-old,
and played, plippety plop plip,
on the membrane of the lake.
The "quick quick quack" of baby ducks
brings to mind the image of the first human
(and how unique she must have been)
who, seeing a duck for the very first time thought,
"Duck equals food."
Back at the cabin,
I find the entrance holds a lone gray spider
hanging sentinel in the dark doorway,
commanding respect and a wide berth.
I give her both.

She should go far.
She NEEDS to go far!
Glad you enjoyed the article, Jude.
