Uefa cup final. Chelsea 2 – 1 Benefica

I watched this with interest. Benefica were in Celitc’s Champion’s league section. We drew 0-0 with them at Parkhead in the first game. It was neither a bad or good result. I felt if we went at them we could have won. They beat us easily in Lisbon. Because Chelsea won the European cup last year and because they are one of England’s premier teams I thought they’d win. I was right and wrong. Benefica were the better team and in the first half in particular should have been a few goals up. Chelsea were better in the second half, and Torres scored from the first goal from what basically was a punt up the park from their keeper. This was initially missed by the cameras and like the Benefica defence we were playing catch up. It was a great individual goal. Benefica were awareded a penalty about six minutes later. Oscar Cardoza who was the best player on the park took it with aplomb and scored. 1-1. Chelsea got a corner at the end of ninety minutes and I thought they couldn’t. They just couldn’t, but Branislav Ivannovic, the sponsor’s man of the match, rose highest and headed the ball into the corner of the net. Benefica were the better team, but they were beaten. Two years ago Chelsea had one shot on goal in the entire game, a Drogba header, and it was enough to equalise and win the European Cup. Another header wins the Uefa Cup for them here. Somebody up there likes them.
