E-A-G-L-E-S… EAGLES!!!!!!

---------------------------------

That’s right, football is back, life is good and all is as it should be in the world. Big impressive win for the Eagles as they soundly dispatched the hapless, hopeless Falcons. Sadly however, the market missed the memo and did not follow suit. Ah well, this weekend’s matchup with the 49’ers should prove a sterner and more revealing test of who’s who and what’s what!

I am of the opinion that many people undervalue the potential contribution of sports to the quality of our daily lives. I personally find there are very beneficial lessons to be gleaned if one is open to the experience. Whether it be football (American), which I watch with enthusiasm bordering on fanatical (according to certain friends and neighbors) or golf, which I play with far more enthusiasm than skill or soccer (football for the rest of the world) which I have tried and failed to either understand or enjoy at any level, although not quite as mysterious as the one with the flat bats and sticks in the ground and people running this way and that with no obvious purpose.. Cricket! What is even going on there? Baffling!

Anyhow.. The big lesson from football is the importance of the team itself. The complex interactions between the various functions of offense, defense, special teams, coaching, planning, practice, adjustments on the fly, the anticipation of the snap and the finality of the whistle. Each individual is valuable but overall the success or failure of the season, the game or a single play rests not on a single player but on the unified effort of all. This is a lesson which can surely be applied across a wide range of daily endeavours to substantial benefit. Golf is a bit more subtle and very much more an individual game. I have dabbled in the past with Eastern philosophy, Buddhist teachings and such. I can’t think of a more appropriate game to hone my practice.

Ponder with me the importance of what is known as “The Moment”. A moving club face meets a stationary ball and all that has come before will determine all that will be. I sometimes find myself becoming lost in the meditation of this moment. I can limit my perception only to the swing itself and the immediate result of this shot. I can also contemplate that all the practice and preparation in the past will influence the future outcome of this stroke. It is a bit disconcerting when the enormity of the universe intrudes and I picture myself standing in the center of infinity. The entire universe and all it contains is centered around me. I, the smallest most insignificant speck, lost among all the other specks, will the universe into existence only through my own perception of it. Yet without the rest of the team (the physical universe), what would there be for me to perceive? Unlike the universe itself, the patience of my playing partners is not infinite, and so I take the club back away from the ball and prepare to meet the future!

I can’t know or control the future, I can only prepare as best as I am able and then be ready to respond to the inevitable but unknown outcome. Were my skills sufficient in this moment? Did the ball follow my design, or did I fail to execute my plan? Did everything I did work to perfection but still the ball lands in an unrepaired fairway divot or carom off a rock or sprinkler head. You know thinking back over time, I have actually seen a friend strike a perfect tee shot only to hit a bird in mid flight! It was a dove, feathers everywhere, POOF!!.. In this as in life, you just can’t anticipate every eventuality. The best you can do is to be mentally prepared to appreciate the humor in the situation and offer a small prayer for the unfortunate dove who I assure you was having a worse day than my friend.

As to soccer and cricket and hockey and all the rest I don’t understand, I can only try. Much as I am doing with my stock market plays. There is much to grasp and my grip is weak. Ah well, “L'audace, l'audace, toujours l'audace.” -Frederick the Great via Patton!

---------------------------------------------------

Not much to remark on in the market the past two weeks. A shake here a wiggle there, mostly a flat boring landscape of scrubby bushes and patchy brown grass. High Tide (HITI) ran aground but held on to first place, for this week at least. Another drop like this however and it will join (FUAPF) in the coulda-shoulda-woulda class. Solitario Zinc (XPL) made a nice move up this week. I have thought for sometime now that there is always value to be found in the basic materials sector. It may not be the sexiest play but like it or not, we need zinc. Not just the diet supplements either, good old fashioned dug up out of the dirt stuff. Ya can’t run the world on bitcoin and software, at some point somebody needs to get their hands dirty!
