First World Problems

My wall-bashing moment at the cinema, and eye-boggling drive home in the 8pm ever-darkening twilight, brought home the fact; old age doesn’t come alone. Realise, it probably only took fifteen seconds for my eyes to adjust to the dark, just seemed longer due to mortification factors. Nevertheless, it’s an issue and it’s here. Wouldn’t say I was totally night-blind, but even with the yellow-night-driving clip-on specs, am no longer happy driving at night. This is a tragedy for cinema and theatre-going as pretty soon it will be dark at 3.30pm. Not this month, but soon. Have a ticket for the ballet later this week and was swithering about bus or car, as there was no Saturday matinee performance this time. Bus would mean an hour wait in Aberdeen late at night and not getting home until 1am. So have decided to drive, slowly, and not book anything over the dark winter evenings again. The fact that ‘the sisters’ shop’ doesn’t close until 7pm, so will be able to visit there too, doesn’t bring the cheer it should. Number30, the independent cinema I usually go to, recently cut down on morning and afternoon showings. Probably staffing and energy costs. Would rather spend my movie money there, but would rather not drive home in the dark, even though that road is more familiar. There is a choice. Can sink under depressing thoughts of grim reaper or worse, missing Dune 3 on the big-screen, or take some senior-affirmative action. Thankfully, have recently started taking magnesium and am feeling downright chipper, sleeping better too. Have decided to write and ask if Number30 would consider taking a poll with folk about daytime shows during the dark winter nights, as even locals would probably still appreciate getting home in the daylight.
In your face Gloria Steinam.
