Hail the happy dawn! There are glitches but most of it is working - the rest is getting sorted.
I was beginning to wonder if I would ever see this day.
Thankyou all for your patience.
I'm trawling through the site at the minute, checking stuff over.
If any of you folks come across anything that doesn't seem to work, or anything that's puzzling you, drop me a line and I'll make sure that it gets checked out and/or fixed.
ok, before I even start can you please list the extra powers we now all posess and how to use them
[there's nowt worse than getting half way through a very hard game only to find out from your ten year old nephew that if you'd gone left on level one you'd be able to fly by now!]
Well Done! Tony and Team,
But I can't log in either!
Will the new format allow short stories longer than 3,000 words? If so what is the maximum number of words I can post?
The ongoing saga of the site redevelopment has been a pain in a very delicate and precious part of the anatomy for everyone involved.
As is often the case with such things, pains in the delicate parts of the anatomy take a while to be put right. We're working at healing ABCtales as quickly as possible, but it's taking a little while to get her back to fighting fit shape.
We can assure you that we are far from dragging our feet on this, and that we are administering to her with the greatest of care and professionalism. She should be back on her feet and ready to take on the world very, very soon.
Thank you all for your patience and understanding.
Oh! I see. ABCtales is a 'SHE'. Well of course, that explains it then. We've been kept waiting for two bloody months whilst 'she' makes her mind up which pair of shoes 'she's' going to wear. Then there's the lippy. After that there's the skirt, 'Does my bum look big in this?' Finally 'she' can't extricate the car from the parking bay because the maker has hidden reverse gear somewhere and in any case 'she' can't reverse and co-ordinate the steering wheel with what 'she' sees in the mirror and.......Tav, what the hell ARE you up to?
Can't log in, can't change my profile or submit any work but I've had fun switching from default to classic a few times. Not keen on that puceaubergine on the front page by the way. What an odd colour! I like the original sausagey pink as on these forums.
my opinion for what it's worth....
i think you've done a great job but can I make a plea for you to consider making one change....
in my humble opinion the only format worth using is 'classic'...the others are very very reader unfriendly...
tests have shown that people find it much easier to read text in narrowish columns, especially on screen.....the default and plain columns are much too wide and on my screen sit very uncomfortably against the left hand margin...
i am worried that if default is the default it will put people off, especially reading longer pieces of text.....
could you please consider getting rid of default and plain and defaulting to classic....
Logging in is one of the glitches - as is getting to your story account. I'm told it's a java script problem that Tav is working on as I look at him - as is getting into the 'back end' for us! It's all part of the same glitch that is being fixed now.
Just be thankful that we are as far as we are - it means that all the code in order to run the site is now with us - and that has been the major stumbling block. The remainder is just time based fixing. There are minor errors that will be sorted over the next two weeks but the big things should all be cleared up in the next 48 hours.
Goat - our posts clashed - I tend to agree and will certainly make the 'classic' the default system if not remove the other ones.
It's one of the more minor matters though and may take a short time to resolve. My first priority is to get the darn thing fully functioning.
It's always been possible to log in so you can read stuff during the 'shutdown' period but you can't do anything else and you have to log back in everytime you you visit the site.
You need to log in via the top of the page thingy and not via 'my abc' or anything else on the side frame.
Personally, I hate the new layout. It looks a mess. Is that because, as was said earlier, I use IE?
As mentioned in the other forum there is not an author search option which I think is a necessity and, also mentioned before, there should be a 'go to top' link at the bottom of the threads ... about a minutes work there for anyone who knows what they are doing.
And, again, all the old deleted stuff is still on the site. How is that going to be sorted out? It isn't just me, everyone's deleted stuff is there from what I've seen.
Wiki. Can you imagine that on abc? Will be a riot. Bring it on.
erm. i don't know if this has been said already. but i've emailed you tony and it got sent back to me. i've emailed you mark also but can i check are you receiving your emails?
Can't log in to actually manage my stories. I've actually got some new writing for the first time in a year. (Many might think that a good reason to keep me locked out of the system...)
Very pleased that you're up and running though Tony, I know how much effort you and the team have put in.
Thanks. Very clear - ahem!!!
"The simplest online database that could possibly work.
Wiki is a piece of server software that allows users to freely create and edit Web page content using any Web browser. Wiki supports hyperlinks and has a simple text syntax for creating new pages and crosslinks between internal pages on the fly.
Wiki is unusual among group communication mechanisms in that it allows the organization of contributions to be edited in addition to the content itself.
Like many simple concepts, "open editing" has some profound and subtle effects on Wiki usage. Allowing everyday users to create and edit any page in a Web site is exciting in that it encourages democratic use of the Web and promotes content composition by nontechnical users."
Yay, ABC is running! There is going to be some heavy duty posting of new work over the next few weeks methinks. I've been saving up some stuff but I think I might I hold it back until the avalanche is over - give it some space to take its first steps before it gets mauled by hundreds of pieces competing for the coveted 'last ten entered' spot.
Go ABC and all involved with getting it back running.

hmmmm, yeah, maybe three pythons in two lines is overdoing the sexual overtones a bit........
what if I just said "module script: trousersnake" instead?

shriek. The colour of the front page gave me a frickin hernia.
It looks like a dessicated nosebleed. even that ponce Lawrence llewellyn-Bogbrush could chose a fouler color scheme. I can't write on that, my poems would run away.
Only joking, each to his own eh. Thanks Tony and team for all your hard work on behalf of us scribblers.

you can do a kind of author search by typing in this way -
(just using eddie as an example here)
the only problem being that you have to know the authors exact username.
Yes, I have searched that way myself but, as you say, if the username is different to the forum name/real name you come unstuck. I only mentioned it because there used to be an option and now their isn't.
Elf, when I click that all it does is take me to the top of the thread I'm reading and not back to the list of threads (which is where 'go to top' takes you).
oh, I get it ... I'm supposed to click return to top of page then click go to top.
Tsk, thats one click too many ... still, it's quicker than scrolling back up I suppose.
The actual set up of the main page is very disjointed. Is too far to the left and not centered. I can log in. hahahahaha
Also different colour to pink would be good :)
Though, its great the site is back up.
Another little problem I've noticed (sorry if this has been mentioned before) is that when you click on random, the URL is always
http://www.abctales.com/browse/random
which isn't going to be very useful for pointing other people to.
Author Search never used to work for me! Hope it gets fixed! In the end I'm sure it will all be hunky dory.
Stormy, given that you chose the thread from the list of threads, you could you back to the list of threads in one click by clicking the "back" arrow, I'd've thought.
