Glory vs Money

What makes an artist happier?

I don't really think glory would come without financial reward. As a writer taking the money without the glory would be no good for me. I have written twaddle for money. I have received less money for work of much better quality. I know which I prefer. I also know which pays more bills. So I refuse to choose. You are presenting a false dilemma which is not good on the argument front. I want both.

I will assume the question means that the glory and/or money come from the artistic effort. Well, I have no expectatin of every making any money from writing, at least not from creative writing. But once in a while I have a small brush with fame and glory by gettng a cherry on this site, or an encouraging email from someone. That may very well be the only external reward to come from all of this for me, but that's more than I had before by far, so I'm not complaining.

I would love to write something as good as Douglas Coupland's take on the question in Generation X, where disillusioned office-boy is shouting that nobody ever got famous, ever, without someone getting rich out of it. Scores of examples are thrown at him, and he bats them all back, until some quiet girl just says, "Anne Frank". I can't think of anyone else. Once you're comfortable, you would always go for glory. I suppose the question could be rephrased - would you rather win the Booker than have your book optioned as a movie by Spielberg ?

Hi, all, I just discovered, thanks to skydolphin, this forum. Well, I don't really know what to say, I’m not used to this. Thank you all, so much for your kind words. Now for the other subject, skydolphin’s question, of money or fame? I feel so rich at the moment!!!

I think you're overlooking the profits made by both the publishers of the book and the producers of the movie with respect to Anne Frank, Andrew. I'm sure both were very lucrative, but sadly not for Anne!

I should also have mentioned that when last in Amsterdam, I went to take a look at the Anne Frank house and was dismayed to find it transformed into a full scale tourist attraction, even to the point where visitors now leave the building via the house next door so as to not disrupt the flow of money through the tills! Somebody is getting VERY rich.

what does it matter it's all a load of ego-tistical rubbish. Just illusions that mess your head up.

Mississippi - true, but if that's true then nobody can be famous without someone getting rich out of it - newspapers, magazines. I think the point is that what she did made nobody rich at the time and her fame did not come as a result of people exploiting her commercially. I.e there was nobody standing behind her making money out of her diary until years after the event. In every other case I can think of (maybe not Captain Scott), money was the driving force for fame - whether that be the person with talent's aim, or the people who give them the opportunities for fame - money is the point.

I don't know Nikoletta. Just kinda beat at the moment. I think I understand what Zen is now. You know when the monks travel miles to see a Zen master and he kicks them down the stairs and suddenly they are enlightened. You suddenly see through all the maya and you realise everything is vanity and it doesn't matter. I was young and my ego got the better of me for the while. Now I see the truth and money and fame mean nothing to me anymore. I will create things just for the hell of it. I am not afraid anymore of anything. I live in the moment and have no thought for yesterday or tommorrow. Live simply and find some kind of connection to my spirit. Watch the world with passive interest. Explore the sacred and become one with the great spirit. Find the elixir of life within me.

The evolution of writing is taking place. We are the evolution of writing. We don't have to stay in the rigid structures of the past. Words are like a finger pointing to the moon. But they are not the moon, just signposts showing us where the moon is. That's all words are.

Once again I apologise for my insane postings. Am currently touring the threads to try and put right the damage my ego has done. I was drunk earlier and behaving irrationally. I won't do it again, I think I have grown up a lot today. Put to death some childish things. I hope I haven't offended anyone or made anyone feel angry towards me. I won't do anything like this again. Sorry. richie.

Glory lives forever with the name that acheived it still attached to it. When you die, your money goes on to someone else.

Of course when we die, we will no longer care for such things as names. Glory will mean nothing to us then. But maybe we could leave something behind that will help others. Maybe a poem or a story that touches their lives.

neither of those. creativity is what makes an artist happy.

I not sure whether glory or money would make me happier but I'd settle for either. Preferably before I'm dead.

skydolphin your crazier than me...hehe I don't know who would win if Glory and Money had a fight. I hope they never do. Maybe we should get them to shake each others hands and make peace or something; walk the fine line inbetween the two, like in the yin/yang symbol. That way your balanced, like the buddha.

If I had the choice between winning the lottery (sorry, very corny) or being published and admired, there would be very little hesitation. Winning hearts and minds, definitely.

In the early part of the 21st Century just rest assured that money always wins. If we make the 22nd Century then it won't.

I have to be honest here....If I had the choice, it would be money!!! I am so overdrawn and poor at the moment that I would gladly welcome 6 winning lottery numbers......(or three) (fifty quid would do it actually) hehehe With my bank account healthier, I could then spend all my time and energies being creative to my hearts content.....I could even write poems while on month long Safari's in Africa.... Oh Joy!
