It's a charming little story. I wonder do you really remember it or is it something you have been told about so often that you aren't sure whether you remember it or not. There are events like that in my childhood.

I definitely remember it. I've heard that it is supposed to be impossible to remember anything from prior to age 2. Not me. I don't remember a large number of things, but there are some. This was one of them. One reason I believe this is that there are other family stories of things that happened concerning me about which I have no memory whatsoever, even though the events took place around the same time or even later. William S. Burroughs claimed to have the same kind of deep memories, and I've personally met people with their own early memories. I suppose there's no way to know for sure, but it is real enough for me.
